Walmart’s $2 million appeal of a $7,000 fine

According to the NY Times, federal officials are finding it “a mystery” that Walmart would be “fighting so hard against such a modest fine.”

I don’t.  Read this three part series at Coyote Blog, detailing his dealings with the now-mystified Department of Labor, and you won’t either.  I’m sure that Coyote and small business owners everywhere are just overcome with sympathy… what with the DoL finding out that dealing with the administration of these regulations consumes scarce professional resources.

Can’t wait to see how business bloggers help OSHA crack this case…

The other point is that the first fine may be small, but if this ever happens again and it’s a recognized “second offense”, the fine would NOT be small. And converting every single one of their stores to “trample proof layouts” would be expensive as crap.

I’m not quite sure how you deal with that… maybe get them to agree that on days like black friday or whatever, you set up more organized lines (the way movie theaters or airports do with dividers). That would seem to be a reasonable compromise, perhaps?
